Over 600 people attended the Olympic Fun Day on Bank Holiday Monday at Rosehill Methodist School in Ashton which was organised by members of the Ashton-under-Lyne Methodist Circuit.

Volunteers from the local churches arranged a wide variety of different activities including a pushchair obstacle course, mock weightlifting, penalty shootout, a sports quiz, face painting and a wide range of craft activities. The children were encouraged to complete 7 or 10 events and were awarded with a medal and a heptathlon or decathlon certificate accordingly.

Magical Mayhem

Entertainment was provided by Paul Brown of Magical Mayhem who put on two 30 minutes magic shows as well as leading a circus skills workshop and doing close up magic and balloon modelling. The whole event was free – including the bbq.

One of the organisers, Rev’d Julie Coates said: ‘Although the weather was overcast and we had to readjust one or two of the activities in case of a downpour, there was a great turnout. The success of the day was due to all of the volunteers who so willing gave their time. Everyone was amazed that the event was free, but as a church we wanted to offer this as a gift to the local community.’
